  1. Ray Said,

You’ve got a really cool website (and your gorgeous). I’m gonna add your site to my blog. I wish I had some suggestions for your architecture hunt for mid-century buildings here in Richmond (would you consider Art Deco buildings of the 1930s or is just before the time period you’re interested??)

I did this site for where I work (VCU Archives) a few years ago:

    http://www.library.vcu.edu/jbc/speccoll/lee.html

keep up the great work - you’re one interesting woman.

  2. Olivia Said,

    Hi Ray!

Thank you for the compliments and thanks for reading.

Great job on the Lee Theatre site! I’ve always thought it would be fun to bring burlesque back to that theater — do a full circle.

I, personally, love art deco and the 1930s in general. I’ve thought about occasionally featuring an art deco piece or two on the site, but i really want he focus to be on the design period after deco. But who knows, I might throw a post on there to mix things up a bit.

Thanks again for reading. I’m glad you’re enjoying the site!

  3. Barry Said,

Hey, just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your site. I’m new to mid-century collecting but I’ve come out of the gate running. I’m a native Richmond’ER and have been to many of the sites that you’ve pictured. When I was a teen I worked at the Belwood Drive-In theater, and actually saw Night of the Living Dead at the Airport Drive-In. Boy, what memories.

I have been very lucky on my finds so far. I will be on my way up to Northern Va tomorrow to pick-up a Heywood Wakefield table, chairs and buffet. My real love is anything ATOMIC!

Keep up the great work and I wish you the best.

    Bear.

  4. Mary Kroll Said,

If you haven’t already toured up and down Rt 1, let me tip you off to two buildings I saw today. The first is just south of Decatur on the northbound side, approximately 159 Jeff Davis, the other is at 1400.

Is the 17th Street Farmers Market retro at all?

  5. David Said,

This is an amazing site!! I am a huge mid-century modern enthusiast living in Manchester. There should be a retro-modern meet up of like minded folks sometime, maybe for a meal at Satelite Lounge ;)

  6. Morgan Said,

Thanks for the info on the barrel-roof building on 20th street (I’ve been doing informal architectural surveys for modern works, and was curious when I found it). It’s great to see that others are caring for our recent past (which is only now becoming eligible for the National Register of Historic Places)!

Recommended places to see: Travel west on Hull Street Road from Belt Boulevard. In the shopping center on the right, immediately before the bridge over the railroad tracks is a Googie-style sign for the old Plaza Drive-in Movie Theater that was there (the screen is in fact still there - and visible from the bridge, but the parking part is now a scrap car lot).

(the fan-shaped area is the old theater)

Also, if you are ever up in Fredericksburg: Carl’s Frozen Custard stand on old U.S. 1 (now on the National Register)

They still use the 1940’s Electro-Freeze equipment to make the custard, and the neon is still lit up at night.

  7. David Said,

I believe one of the buildings Mary Kroll mentioned above is the former Burger Chef at 316 Jeff Davis. Though it’s behind a chain-link fence, it’s no doubt a Burger Chef in the same style as these:

  8. Pepper Said,

Hey, I was wondering how I may be able to join your group? Thanks, just e-mail me anytime…

  9. aj Said,

hey, your site is great! i am an avid mid century collector. i even own two of the items that have been posted on your craigslist section [the seafoam green wall mounted stove along with the 70s chopping block dishwasher]. i also have a tattoo of a 1950’s seafoam green refrigerator.

i would love to join the site rather than just subscribe so please let me know how i can go about doing that.

also, what prompted me to comment was this craigslist posting. i am a renter so this is not a possibility for me [the stove and diswasher are being used as decoration], thought i would share:

    hope someone gets it!

  10. Frigidaire range is cool Said,

I’m looking for either a replacement range or possibly just a few of the top panels which were recently damaged due to an oven fire. Please let me know if this range is still available.

    Thanks!

  11. Rob Said,

I am in Charlottesville and I am a huge mid-century modern enthusiast. I was wondering if you could give me any information on where to buy used modern furniture in the Richmond area. I am also interested in joining your group.

  12. Tim Said,

Olivia, I see you have a snap shot of my 1964 ladies bicycle here on your amazing site! Thought I’d share my latest find and hope you enjoy ! - My 1953 Superior Travel Trailer. aka “The Atomic Tin Can” , complete with all original Birchwood interior, kitchenette, dinette, shower and all wrapped in yards of vintage aluminum
( painting it two-tone seafoam & white soon)

Pictured along with the trailer are my vintage lounge chair and 1967 Schwinn collegiate deluxe 5 speed bicycle.

I’m in love with your blog. I’m linking you up!!!

  14. Corkey Said,

Did Toby ever find a house. There are alot of older neighborhoods in Richmond that probably could meet his needs. I just found this sit so I guess he is probably bought two by now.

I enjoy your sit, its nice to look at some of the old places in Richmond that I remember as a kid………

Lets see if you can find some of these things:
