Tonight’s MCMeetup

Posted by Olivia under MCMeetup

EDIT 6:24 p.m. — The storm is gone and it is BEAUTIFUL out! Bowling is ON! Hope to see everyone at Plaza Bowl at 8 p.m.!

It looks like the storm will be past us by this evening, so we should be all right for tonight’s MCMeetup at Plaza Bowl (assuming it didn’t lose power or anything). Still, I’d like to hear from those who has planned to attend. Should we keep with tonight or reschedule it for next weekend?

Thoughts?

September’s MCMeetup! Plaza Bowl!

Posted by Olivia under Uncategorized

It’s that time again, folks! It’s time for all the Retro Richmond readers to get together and talk about all the mid-century places we love in this great city! This time we’ll be conversing while throwing strikes at Plaza Bowl!

For those who don’t know, Plaza Bowl is a duckpin bowling alley and is the only one of its kind in the area. The balls are smaller, the pins are smaller, and it costs less than regular bowling. Duckpin bowling gained popularity in the 1930s, and the interior of Plaza Bowl doesn’t look like it’s stepped a day out of the 1950s.

We will be meeting, this Saturday, Sept. 6, at 8 p.m. at Plaza Bowl. (Directions)

I had the pleasure of meeting Retro Richmond reader David last weekend, and he has assured me that he and his wife will be there AND he’s bringing some goodies for show-and-tell! I’m especially excited about that!

So come out, throw a few gutterballs and let’s talk about mid-century modernism! You never know what other fun things we might uncover! During our last MCMeetup, we got an impromptu special tour of the old Bellevue Theater (which was also featured on North Richmond News. Very exciting!).

If you would like more information about the MCMeetup or have any questions, shoot me an e-mail at olivia@retrorichmond.com.

Hope to see everyone there!

First MCMeetup a success!

Posted by Olivia under MCMeetup

The first Retro Richmond MCMeetup was a success! There was great food, great conversation, great stories and, as an added bonus, we got to tour the old Bellevue movie theater afterward! I’ll be posting those photos later today.

For those of you who missed out, we’ll meet up again next month on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. at Plaza Bowl for a night of mid-century discussion and duckpin bowling! Mark your calendars now!

The big day is almost here and I’ve only heard from one person who said he plans to attend. I KNOW there are more retro lovers out there! Let’s spread the word!

Come out, grab some grub, and let’s talk about a bygone Richmond! Find out all the details here.

I didn’t want to spoil the surprise, but I was really hoping to discuss the possibility of starting an Atomic Age Alliance chapter in Richmond and maybe work to save some of the mid-century architecture this great city has to offer.

About the AAA:

The Atomic Age Alliance is a 501 c3 NON PROFIT organization dedicated to celebrating historic Mid Century Modernism and Atomic Age design, signage, architecture, culture and business through ongoing community advocacy, activism and educational programs.

Join Globally – Act Locally.

What a great topic to discuss over pancakes! But if you can’t make it, I’d like to hear your opinions on the matter. Is this something Richmond residents are interested in? Tell me your thoughts.

I hope to see more of you tomorrow at Dot’s!

All right all you mid-century enthusiasts! The first official Retro Richmond MCMeetup will be at Dot’s Back Inn this Saturday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m.

Dot's Back Inn

It’s not the most mid-century place in town, but it’s cheap, the food is good and it’s close to my house (so if no one shows up, I didn’t drive out of my way for an overpriced brunch).

I wanted to keep the first MCMeetup casual so everyone can get to know each other. We can discuss where the next meetup should be during brunch. (I’m already casting my vote for duckpin bowling!)

If you think you can make it, let me know. That way I’ll know about how many seats we need. We can meet outside at 10. If you’re coming late and we’re already seated, look for the girl with bling’d out vintage cat eye glasses. I’m sure I’ll be the only one!

Dot’s Back Inn is located in Northside at 4030 MacArthur Ave. Here are some directions if you need them:

I look forward to meeting everyone!!

I won’t have Internet access this weekend, so I’ll leave you with post No. 3 to mull over until Monday.

A couple of people have mentioned the idea of having a Richmond mid-century enthusiasts meet-up of sorts. Retro Richmond reader Barry has suggested maybe getting a group together and hitting up some of the old drive-in theaters around the area. MCM enthusiast and Manchester resident David suggested maybe getting a group together and grabbing a bite to eat somewhere, like the Satellite Lounge.

I love both these ideas. I was thinking maybe one Saturday (or Sunday) a month (we would need to decide which one — first, second, etc — for consistency) Retro Richmond can host a mid-century enthusiasts meet-up. (MCMeetup? I can see the logo now!)

One Saturday we’ll get brunch or dinner at one of the many fabulous MCM diners around town. Maybe another we’ll take in a drive-in movie. If there’s a particular event in town on MCMeetup day, we could go there. If people are interested, we could even meet at a specific MCM building and then discuss it over coffee or a meal somewhere. The ideas are endless.

I guess what I need to know is whether this is something people are interested in? If so, please suggest a day that works for you, ie: first Saturday of the month, fourth Sunday of the month, etc. I want to know what kind of interest, if any, there is before I make this an official monthly event.

While I love a good mid-century diner, eating by myself is pretty depressing! So if you’re interested, post a comment. Let’s make MCMeetup a reality!

Thanks to Barry and David for the great suggestions!
